Signs Your Water Heater is Beyond a Repair and May Need Replacing

Have you noticed that your hot water is not as hot as it once was? If you’ve noticed that your hot showers are getting cooler and the hot water is not lasting as long as it should—it could be a sign of an aging water heater that simply is beyond a water heater repair.

Your water heater, just like the other appliances in your home, is going to need replacing someday.  Here are some additional signs to watch for indicate your water heater is on its way out:

  1. Age of water heater —the average water heater lasts between 9 to 11 years.
  2. Water is rusty and cloudy– you can see it in the water.
  3. Less hot water– you’ve noticed that your unit is not delivering the amount of hot water you expect.
  4. Water leaks– the tank corrodes from the inside out. While the exterior could look fine the corrosion is in the inside.
  5. Corrosion at the bottom of the tank–you may notice visible signs of corrosion around the bottom of the water tank.

If you see any of these signs that your water heater is aging, it’s time to think about replacing it. Should you consider an ENERGY STAR water heater? According to energystar.gov a good reason to replace your water heater is efficiency. Water heaters are the second highest source of energy usage in the home. ENERGY STAR-certified water heaters use 14 to 55 percent less energy than equipment that meets the minimum federal standard.
