Heat pumps work different than a gas or electric furnace since, they work by moving heat instead of creating heat.

If you grew up in Virginia, or in the colder climates, chances are you already know the benefits of a heat pumps. What I discovered while living in Northern Virginia and working for a heating, ventilation, and air conditioning contractors (HVAC) who specialize in heat pump repairs, service and replacements is that the heat pump unlike other central HVAC systems does both, they heat and provide air conditioning for the home.

Heat pumps are becoming very popular in our Northern Virginia area when replacing an HVAC system, greatly due to the rebates offered by local utility companies. These campaigns offered by utility companies promote, educate, and encourage homeowners to upgrade and replace their home HVAC systems with heat pumps. Heat pump air conditioners are a great choice for the energy conscious consumer. With advances in variable speed technology these system are super efficient, the heat pump is a heater in the winter and an air conditioner in the summer. So, an air conditioner can be a heat pump.

According to the energy.gov website, the heat pump provides an energy-efficient alternative to furnaces and air conditioners, because they move heat rather than generate heat. Heat pumps can provide equivalent conditioning at as little as one quarter of the cost of operating conventional cooling and heating systems.

For our clients who have homes in our Northern Virginia who don’t have ductwork, or those that don’t want to install more ductwork, installing ductless mini-split heat pump systems vs. package units is an option.

If you own an air conditioner heat pump system one of the challenges you may face is finding an HVAC contractor who understands and specializes in heat pump repairs, service and installations.
