4 Tips to Lower Your Energy Cost This Winter

Looking for ways to reduce your energy and gas bills this winter? Did you know that almost half the energy used in your home goes to running your heating and cooling system? That’s an astonishing fact we learned from the website Energystar.gov! What’s more, according to Washington Gas, during the cold winter months your heating system may operate up to 15 hours a day and account for nearly half of your annual gas usage!

Here are a few ways you can make your HVAC system more energy efficient during the heating season:

  • Change your air filter regularly — especially during these heavy use months. Dirty air filters prevent airflow from flowing through your system, making it far less efficient.
  • Purchase a programmable thermostat. A programmable thermostat allows you to schedule automatic temperature changes based on your schedule.
    • Be attentive about maintenance — it’s important to regularly maintain your HVAC system with regular tune-ups. One for heating season, another for the AC season, and clean as needed.
  • Invest in energy efficient HVAC equipment — If your HVAC system is 10 years old, and uses R-22 refrigerant it might be time for a replacement. Consider replacing your HVAC system with an ENERGY STAR qualified system to maximize energy savings.

Remember if you are considering replacing your AC system, furnace, heat pump, boiler, or water heater and you are a resident of Arlingtonthe Arlington Initiative to Rethink Energy (AIRE) is a great way to save money and improve the energy efficiency of your home.

For residents of Virginia and customers of Washington Gas there are rebates currently available for natural gas furnace upgrades.
