Nobody wants to replace an A/C system that’s still working…but many are starting to think about it!  The extreme heat has prompted many homeowners with older A/C systems who live in condos and single family homes to get estimates and prepare for replacement.

Have you been told your A/C system needs a major repair? Does your old A/C system use R-22 refrigerant?   If you answered YES to any of these questions this post should help you decide when it’s time to replace your R-22 heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system.

What is the average lifespan of an HVAC system?

When serviced annually and properly maintained the average life of a typical Air Conditioning system is about 15 plus years.

About older A/C systems… If your Air conditioners is over 10 years old, it may use R-22.  The price of R-22 has skyrocketed resulting in significantly higher repair bills.

Depending on the exact age of your system, over time replacement parts could get harder to find, and the price of R-22 refrigerant will get more expensive– as production is limited.

Older system typically have a lower SEER rating. SEER measures air conditioners’ cooling efficiency. A higher SEER rating means greater energy efficiency. Today the Department of Energy (DOE) mandates for our region 14 SEER, using R410A refrigerant.

Why R-22 refrigerant is so costly?

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) determined that R-22 damages the ozone layer and is currently in the last few years of phasing out R-22. With the phasing out, the EPA is limited the production and it will not allow R-22 to be imported or made int the U.S. starting in 2020. R410A is the refrigerant used in the manufacturing of new air conditioners today.
